'Rule Britannia'
22" x 30" painted
2003 signed and numbered edition of 50
‘The Royal Series’ were painted by Leighton-Jones shortly after returning to England after having lived in the United States for more than thirty years.
The inspiration came from three sources: the first was the sheer joy of the artist returning to his homeland, the second that the year happened to be the year of the Queen’s Jubilee - 2003, and finally a catalogue of an exhibition by the great British artist, Luciene Freud. This was given to Leighton-Jones by his son Daniel and he
remarked at the time, “Freud’s studies of the human form and his use of a muted and limited colour pallette reminded me of my early art school training and the cool greys of the British climate”.
Leighton-Jones prefers not to comment on the images, but would rather the spectators form their own interpretations. The original paintings were done in a matter of a few weeks and references were made from magazines and newspapers. There is no malice in the scenes, the characters are depicted with alarming likeness, a deep understanding of their personalities, and an uncanny sense of their relationship to one another.
Six brilliantly witty images created by Leighton-Jones,‘ - the Master’. Available only from
The Art 4 Art Company as a limited edition of 50 giclee prints (of each painting) on stretched, varnished canvas. Each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and all are signed, numbered and titled by the artist.
